Bill Belichick to Add Son Steve to Coaching Staff at UNC
Bill Belichick Reunites with Son Steve, Hiring Him as Defensive Coordinator at UNC
Bill Belichick isn’t wasting any time bringing his son onto his coaching staff at North Carolina. According to multiple reports, Belichick is set to name Steve Belichick as the new defensive coordinator for the Tar Heels, reuniting the father-son duo that worked together in the NFL as recently as 2023.
Steve, 37, comes to UNC after a successful season as the defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies in 2024. Under his leadership, the Huskies’ defense saw significant improvement, jumping from 99th to 26th in the nation in yards allowed per game. Their passing defense, which ranked second in the Big Ten, allowed just 166.8 yards per game.
Before his time at Washington, Steve served as a defensive assistant on his father’s staff with the New England Patriots, contributing to the team’s renowned defensive schemes. Now, he’ll look to bring that same success to North Carolina, where Bill Belichick is starting his first season as head coach.
This season, the Tar Heels’ defense struggled, allowing 28.2 points per game, ranking 12th in the ACC. With Steve now in charge, the hope is that he can transform UNC’s defense the same way he did at Washington.
Before officially joining the Tar Heels, Steve will finish his duties with Washington, coaching the Huskies’ defense in their bowl game at the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl against Louisville.
